In an effort to eradicate illegal activities associated with cross-border matchmakers, Chinese authorities are increasingly clamping down on such services as demand for them rises.
Two years ago, a cross-border matchmaking service introduced a Vietnamese woman named Le Hong Duyen to a young migrant worker from Sichuan province named Chen Tao. Nine months later, Duyen married Chen and relocated to Guangdong province where she established her own matchmaking business, connecting Vietnamese women with Chinese men.
The service offered by Duyen costs 38,000 yuan for Vietnamese brides; this fee covers ing of legal documentation, a translation service, Mandarin language lessons, medical checks, and wedding arrangements. However, these matchmaking practices are illegal in both China and Vietnam according to official statements.
Chen Shiqu, responsible for combating trafficking within the Ministry of Public Security, confirmed on November 12th that it was agnst Chinese law to establish marriage agencies involving foreign individuals. He also stated that no one is permitted to engage in fraudulent or profit-making matchmaking activities involving foreigners. His remarks have effectively squashed online speculations suggesting that hiring a foreign bride is merely a personal choice and legally permissible.
Duyen sidesteps official prohibitions by clming on her website that her service is purely personal, with the Vietnamese women listed being fris and relatives rather than clients. Similarly, Honest Asian Brides Network, a matchmaking platform where Duyen worked before relocating to China in 2009, portrays itself as merely offering consultancy services instead of matchmaking services according to their website. The company boasts branches across Hong Kong, Guangdong, Shangh, and Vietnam.
