Panel P35 explores the complex nature of intimacy, love, and sexuality within transnational relationships. This panel investigates how borderswhether political, bureaucratic, or institutionalaffect these relational dynamics.
The discussion will delve into the nuanced experiences of couples that navigate boundaries imposed by state policies, ger norms, racial identities, age categories, and other intersecting factors. Issues related to global politics, economic concerns, and state regulations significantly influence sexual intimacies and emotional connections across borders.
Cross-border romantic relationships often intertwine with sensuality and emotions that forge connections as well as divisions between individuals, communities, and states. These dynamics can be seen as a hallmark of modernity a focus on personal choice, desire, individualism, partnership, and citizenship. Yet, transnational intimacies are also often imbued with tension, conflict, and anxiety due to their geopolitical context.
The selected papers for this panel provide ethnographic insights into various contexts where love transcs borders:
Intimate within Limits: Love, Cross-Border Marriage, and the State in Contemporary Malaysia
The Zombification of the 'Other': A Defining Characteristic in a Trio of Exploitation between African Men, Western Women, and Relatives at Home
Love Across State Borders: Transcontinental Polygamy as Seen in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau

Speculative Encounters: The Interplay of Optimism and Genealogy Across the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Border
Love After the Colony: Intimacy and Intimate Tensions on a Philippine Island
